The Traffic Lights® Framework (TLF) is an innovative course that facilitates the appropriate identification and response to a broad range of sexual behaviours in children and young people, ranging from behaviours that are normal and age appropriate, to those that are problematic and signal the need for follow up and support. At its core, is the traffic lights symbol - Green, Orange and Red. Through the various modules, students learn to apply this representation to the sexual behaviours of children and young people, to enable identification of whether a behaviour is of concern, to understand what the behaviour is communicating, and to respond appropriately to the behaviour, ensuring the safety of the child. The course focuses on issues related to sexuality in childhood from interdisciplinary perspectives (for example, sociology, psychology, public health, paediatrics and childhood studies), with an emphasis on understanding the ways in which social and cultural systems shape understandings of childhood sexuality and sexuality more generally.
This course explores healthy sexuality in children from 0-9 years and behaviours that are typical and age appropriate.
1. Critically engage with contemporary interdisciplinary approaches to sexuality studies
2. Situate understandings of sexuality within a social justice and human rights framework that recognises the importance of sexual ethics, sexual rights, sexual health and sexual education
3. Demonstrate expertise in understanding healthy sexual development and sexual behaviours and in apply the TLF framework to an extensive range of sexual behaviours displayed by children and young people
4. Demonstrate a strong understanding of best practice approaches to responding to sexual risk, sexual abuse disclosure or signs of sexual abuse
5. Critically evaluate the benefits and risks that technology poses to the healthy sexual development and the safety of children and young people
6. Demonstrate a strong understanding of the needs of minority youth with regards to sexuality and gender identity, and the unique barriers that they face.
